KJ Shepherd is a historian of standardized testing. They are a PhD candidate in the History Department at the University of South Florida. Their dissertation, ““Measuring Up: Standardized Testing and the Making of Modern American Identity, 1945-2001,” examines the ways in which Americans used standardized testing data to stake broader arguments about race, gender, geopolitics, ability, and consumerism during the mid-to-late twentieth century. KJ is also interested in designing teaching practices that use history to develop postsecondary students’ writing and critical thinking skills.
